The consortium partners of the Paris Agreement Compatible (PAC) Scenarios for Energy Infrastructure project deplore the use of military forces by Russia on Ukraine and express their support to Ukrainian citizens. This war brings multi-layered geopolitical consequences: first and foremost, a major humanitarian crisis and deep human sufferings for the region and beyond. But the war and its geo-political, social and economic implications also bring severe impacts on energy security and decarbonisation efforts.

European deep dependence on Russian fossil fuels imports have led to soaring energy prices affecting the entire economy. The response to the energy crisis must be the same as to the climate crisis, as both are rooted in heavy dependence on fossil fuels. This war reaffirms that the only sustainable way forward is to push forward with decarbonisation efforts and accelerate energy savings and the deployment of renewable energy sources, in particular solar and wind.

It is possible to run energy systems with 100% renewable energy sources, the abilities to do it are already in place and  a growing number of energy scenarios, among them the PAC scenario, show that a 100% renewable future is indeed possible at both the European and global scale. Such a system requires careful planning, optimisation of all resources and fast implementation that place special attention on the system’s efficiency, savings, and optimisation across supply chains and demand. This requires integrated resources planning, including nature and ecosystems protection objectives.

Understanding challenges and opportunities related to these aspects are of utmost importance if we want to accelerate and shift towards a 100% renewables-based system. The PAC consortium partners are committed to continue exploring ways to address these goals in our activities and actions in order to contribute to building a sustainable and peaceful future.
